68% of U.S. Adults Take Nutritional Supplements

If you are taking supplements on a daily basis, you are not alone. In the past four years, the annual survey by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) showed a steady increase in the number of people taking nutritional supplements. Since 2009, these numbers have increased by 3% to reach 68% in 2012.
This online survey was conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs and included more than 2000 American adults over the age of 18. The survey results revealed that 76% of the respondents consider themselves ‘regular’ users of supplements, while 18% view themselves as occasional users. The remaining 6% consider themselves to be seasonal users. These numbers had also risen about 3% since 2009.
Next, the survey took a look at what supplements were being taken. Not surprisingly the most popular supplement being taken by Americans was the multivitamin. 52% of adults said they had used multivitamins in the past year. A 5% increase was seen with people from 35-54 years of age, which reported the use of multivitamins 54% of the time. This represents an increase of 5% since the previous year.
Another finding was that 85% of U.S. adults believed that supplements are safe, effective and have a high level of quality. Their confidence level had remained at about the same level for the past 3 years.
The results have proven year after year that two-thirds of people in the U.S. use nutritional supplements as a part of their health regimen. These are encouraging findings which indicate that Americans are becoming increasingly more health-conscious and proactive about managing their health.
