GregHi, my name is Greg Marshall.

I've been interested in health and wellness all my life. Because I was a sickly child and suffered from various ailments frequently, I developed a tremendous determination early on to improve my health.

Today I am much healthier, much stronger and, most importantly, a lot happier. But what makes me happier still is having the ability to help other people improve their health and actually watch people get better doing the things I recommend.

The turning point for me was in high school when I read an article by Dr. Linus Pauling about the benefits of vitamin C. From that point on I was fascinated with vitamins and wanted to learn everything there was to know about them.

I completed my university degree and went on to work for a big supplement manufacturer in California. Over time I worked my way up in the organization and eventually ended up overseeing their whole supplement production process. I went on to work for two more companies after that, spending a total of 20 years in the industry.

My experience in the industry

For the most part, I was proud to be part of the supplement industry. I felt like I was really doing something good by helping people stay healthy and live longer.

But during that time, I also saw the ugly side of the industry. I saw that most manufacturers make supplements not because they genuinely care about the health of their customers, but simply because they want to make money. And because of that, many of them cut corners when it comes to the quality of their products.

In fact, the vast majority of supplements out there have little to no real nutritional value and the ones that do, rarely have the right delivery system for your body to make use of them.

Most consumers don't know it, but every vitamin can be sourced in a variety of ways and not all of them are natural or healthy. Vitamin B12, for example, can come in the form of Cyanocobalamin, Cobamamide, Methylcobalamin, or Adenosylcobalamin. Most manufacturers go with the synthetic Cyanocobalamin form because it is cheaper to make and has a longer shelf life. Unfortunately, it cannot be readily absorbed by the body. It also contains trace amounts of cyanide, making it slightly toxic if taken over a long period of time.

You see, natural vitamins – which offer much better absorption – can cost as much as 3 times more than their synthetic counterparts. This is why most manufacturers use cheap, synthetic versions. They simply want to keep their costs as low as possible. Unfortunately this means that customers are buying products that are, at best, not very effective and, at worst - potentially harmful to their health.

I just didn't feel comfortable being part of these practices. With all the misinformation some of these companies spread and the somewhat unethical way they went about manufacturing and marketing their products, I couldn't be part of the process anymore. I'd had enough, so I quit.

Today, I work as an independent consultant offering advice on best manufacturing practices. I originally created MultivitaminGuide.org as a part-time hobby, but over time I've started recognizing just how much potential it actually has. So now I use this website to educate consumers on how to tell the difference between ineffective supplements and high-quality ones that can truly make a difference to their health.

The best information about supplements on the web

My original vision for this site was to round up every single multivitamin I could find and test it in a laboratory. I wanted to see if every ingredient listed on the label was really in each and every tablet and if each nutrient was properly absorbed by the body.

But I quickly realized that this just wasn't practical. You see, it costs about $5000 to do a detailed laboratory test on just one nutrient from one product!

If I wanted to analyze a multivitamin with 20 nutrients, it was going to cost me $100,000. If I wanted to do laboratory tests on 100 products that each had 20 nutrients, it was going to cost me $10 MILLION!!

I clearly didn't have that kind of money. Not even close. I could probably afford to fully analyze 2-3 products before my money ran out. So I had to come up with a more economic way of accomplishing my goal. It took a while, but I eventually found a way that works.

I picked 100 popular multivitamin products, and had their listed ingredients entered into a database. I made sure to record the chemical form of each nutrient and the amount contained in each serving.

Next, I devised a scoring system which looks at four parameters: completeness, potency, bioavailability and safety. Then using a proprietary formula, I calculated an Overall Effectiveness score for each product. The formula I use is based on thorough review of current scientific literature published by the US National Library of Medicine, as well as authoritative health research publications from other countries around the world.

How do we pay for our research?

For a small organization like ours, the key to staying afloat is keeping costs as low as possible. Had I followed my original vision, I would have been out of funding in a couple of months.

With the new approach, which relies on interpreting the information provided by the manufacturers, we are able to provide a reliable estimate of the effectiveness of any multivitamin which cost us as little as $200 in research. This gave us the ability to publish the information on our website free of charge, which enabled us to reach a significantly greater number of people with it.
